#28 Melani Mariani: We’re All Onions

A photo of Melani Mariani from Indie88 smiling with red lipstick and her hands behind her back.

Melani Mariani is a radio announcer based in Toronto, currently hosting Middays at Indie88 (88.1 CIND FM). She is a former host for 102.1 The Edge in Toronto where she quite literally "worked her way up the ladder" from receptionist to morning show.

In this episode of the Women in Media Podcast, Mel talks about being real with her listeners during a global pandemic with divided opinions and unexpected highs and lows.

Melani touches on how she worried about starting a family and how it would affect her personality on-air. She also talks about how insecure a radio job can be, especially when you're pregnant for the second time. She reflects on a difficult experience at the Edge when she was fired shortly after she got pregnant with her second daughter, Margot.

Melani and I first crossed paths at The Edge  where I worked part-time during my time at FM96 in London. I'm lucky enough to call her a colleague again at Indie88 and I'm not lying when I say she may be the nicest person I've ever met in Canadian radio! I loved her analogy about all of us women being onions! Have a listen to see why the episode is titled this way...enjoy!
